The Marvel Universe Is Coming To Brisbane

Whether it’s the insanity of box office results or the chaos seen in Brisbane’s CBD when Thor and Loki came to film, Brisbane is a town that loves its Marvel characters.

They’re sexy, they’re complicated, they’re bad-ass, and even better, their exhibition is rolling into town next year.

‘Marvel: Creating The Cinematic Universe’ is a big deal for Queensland. It will be the first major Marvel exhibition held in Australia, as well as the largest to ever be shown in an art museum. It’s a hell of a coup for the Gallery Of Modern Art (GOMA), and GOMA has been quick to shout the news from the rooftops. Unsurprisingly, Marvel fans are already excited about the exhibition’s May opening.

If you’ve ever wondered how such varied comic lore can be pared down into a cohesive movie series (and it’s one of the most asked questions from fans, after all), this may well be the exhibition of your fandom dreams. ‘Marvel: Creating The Cinematic Universe’ isn’t just a chance to take a look at the costumes, props and behind the scenes set pics of some of the hottest names in the industry. It’s also a look at how the cinematic franchise is painstakingly crafted from decades of ever-changing comic narratives.

For those unfamiliar with the nature of comic book storytelling, each author brings their own ideas and mythos to the stories, changing the character in subtle (and not so subtle: looking at you, ‘Captain America’) ways. Each character is perpetually changing, reborn into their own, evolving mythology for good or ill.

MCU.3 2016
The journey from epic pile of comics to the MCU takes a lot of people, time and energy, and this exhibition aims to show off just how much work goes into such an effortlessly-seeming movie franchise. Whether you’re a fan of the MCU or more romanced by the comic book artistry, there’s going to be something for everyone at this exhibit.

Though GOMA and Marvel are keeping the details rather vague at this point, it’s a safe bet that we’re in for a hell of an experience when Marvel rolls into town again. After all, Marvel has a knack for showmanship.

‘Marvel: Creating The Cinematic Universe’ will be on show at GOMA (located in South Bank’s cultural precinct) from 27 May to 3 September, 2017.
