Sydney Underground Film Festival 2020 Programme

'Cosmic Spaghetti'
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Sydney Underground Film Festival is back for its 14th year.

The 2020 event will take place entirely online, offering a new opportunity for audiences across the country to experience some of the world's most experimental, subversive and unhinged cinema from their living rooms.

For ten days in September, a fully-curated programme will be available to watch, filled with diverse and experimental films, and films that will make you cry with laughter – something that is definitely needed in these challenging times. There are more than 100 short films from 20 different countries to view.

Returning this year are short film sessions OzPloit, WTF!, Reality Bites, LSD Factory, and Love/Sick alongside two all-new programmes: Sh!t Scared (dedicated to new horror shorts) and Late Night Cartoons (some whacked-out animations. . . For grown-ups).

Deep Clean
'Deep Clean'

Also, for the second year, the Take48 film challenge joins the programme. It's a competition taking place for 48 hours. Last year's was a huge success, with 30 film submitted and a sold-out screening. This year it will be open to international submissions.

"With so much uncertainty this year, sadly we were unable to forge ahead with a physical festival but felt it was important to stay connected to the film festival community," Festival Director Katherine Berger says. "It’s actually an exciting prospect to be able to offer a collection of short film programmes to a worldwide audience."

Modern Whore
'Modern Whore'

Some festival highlights include 'Baby', 'Dark Water' and 'At The Edge Of The Night' (in the OzPloit! programme), 'Modern Whore' and 'The Deepest Hole' (from Reality Bites), 'Deep Clean', 'Dinner For Two' and 'Stream' (from Love/Sick), 'Sweet Sweet Kink' and 'Cosmic Spaghetti' (from Late Night Cartoons) and 'The Devil's Harmony' (from Sh!t Scared).

Films will be available to watch on-demand for the duration of the festival.
