'House Of Cards' was always going to end after two seasons, until it wasn't.
The Netflix series — which was sold as a two-season show by creator Beau Willimon — has just surprised everyone by announcing a third season, weeks ahead of the second season's launch.
Shortly after the announcement, Kevin Spacey — the show's star and executive producer — told the National Post that he, Willimon and executive producer David Fincher were "always open" to the idea of a third season.
"We announced two seasons and then [Netflix CCO] Ted Sarandos had said a few months ago that he hoped it would continue since everyone was so pleased and delighted with the series," Spacey said. "We were always open to the idea of the story continuing and that's the position everyone's taken.
While the news is exciting for fans of the show, it does mean that the second season's finale — which would have brought the story to a close — will now be yet another cliffhanger.
The second season of 'House Of Cards' will be made available in its entirety on Netflix from February 14; it begins airing on Foxtel from Saturday February 15.
