Pop culture, pop music and gaming are three of Jesse’s biggest passions. Lady Gaga, Real Housewives and The Sims can almost sum him up – but he also adores a night at the cinema or a trip to the theatre.

James Gunn hits the ground running with this fresh, vibrant new story about the Man Of Steel.

This new ‘Superman’ is a total home run – vibrant colours and stunning special effects give it the 2025 sheen, while acting performances are captivating across the board.

Metropolis feels expansive and lived in, making it the perfect backdrop for a story like this one – a story with layers of intrigue, charm, and cultural relevance.

The events of ‘Superman’ are, admittedly, a touch chaotic. . . But luckily for the most part, it’s a beautiful kind of chaos which doesn’t detract – it only pulls you in more. There’s a lot going on here, and every element of the plot is engaging enough to make you want to see it through to the end.

There’s some cleverly-written political commentary throughout ‘Superman’ which viewers will no doubt be able to draw parallel lines to reality from. A good movie will do that, and do it well.

Action sequences are dizzying – even at times a little overwhelming – throwing you right in the middle of things, and taking you on a thrilling ride.

David Corenswet IS Clark Kent, and he IS Superman. His Clark (while not seen too much here) is charming, caring, and a little goofy – with a deep love of family at the core of his being. Meanwhile, his Superman is a shimmering example of a good person (or, alien): seeing the good in everyone he encounters, always looking out for others, and leading with kindness.

Rachel Brosnahan shines as Lois Lane, a dedicated reporter and a strong, bold woman. She constantly takes charge, and is fun to watch each time she’s on screen.

David and Rachel’s chemistry is palpable on screen.

Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor is a fresh, edgy, hilarious villain – there’s something equally sharp and menacing about him, and Nicholas manages to walk the line between caricature and terrifying presence well, throughout.

This ‘Superman’ feels like a bold new beginning for the character, and for DC. It’s a rip-roaring, dizzying ride through the skies packed with action, emotion, and intention. . . Held together by an exceptional cast, breathtaking special effects (if you can, see this film in IMAX!) and a thrilling – at times chaotic – plot.

★★★★☆ 1/2.
