Redland Performing Arts Centre is putting together their first film festival where you will be treated to a feast of Studio Ghibli anime films.
This Japanese animation film studio has produced 18 feature films, with 8 of these among the 15 highest-grossing anime films made in Japan. It is often referred to as the Disney of the East. Zane Trow, the Creative Arts Centre’s manager, gives an insider's perspective.
What is it all about and how did it all come about?
We decided to start our film program by choosing children's film, and then choosing to celebrate the work of world-renowned Japanese feature filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki (who retires this year at age 72). Mr. Miyazaki is the co-founder of Studio Ghibli and creator of these legendary animated films, widely regarded as just as important in the history of film as Disney.
What is your fav film of all time and why?
Well my favourite Ghibli film is ' My Neighbor Totoro' — it creates such a magical world, and the story links so beautifully to the trials and tribulations of an ordinary family. The hand-drawn animation is simply stunning, every frame is an exceptional artwork.

Do you think Australian audiences appreciate foreign film? Or is it a niche audience still?
I think that Australia is well used to films from all over the world, just as Australians themselves come from all over the world. Let’s face it — Hollywood movies are foreign films too!!
