Australia’s international smartphone film festival SmartFone Flick Fest (SF3) returns this November.
Last year’s event weathered the COVID storm, with a combo of online and live screenings, and this year, the SF3 Mini category – formerly the ‘Iso’ award – has come into its own again. Entries must be three minutes or less, shot inside or out with only phones or tablets. The Mini film theme is ‘RISE’.
Since its creation by dynamic duo Angela Blake and Ali Crew, filmmakers of all ages and all locations (from Australia and beyond) have taken to this accessible and creative festival, where the main rule is that all movies must be shot entirely on a mobile phone or tablet. There is more than $40,000 worth of prizes, including mentorships, classes, memberships, apps, lenses, mics, phones, tablets and more.
Also happening this year is the SF3 First Nations Award, open to the best and most promising filmmaker – worldwide – identifying as First Nation, Indigenous and/or Aboriginal.
“A smart phone is an instant portal to the world,” filmmaker Philip Noyce says. “These innovators have no fear of technology, no barriers to expressing themselves. These are truly our next generation of cinema pioneers… I’m in awe of their films.”
Entries are open until 1 September.
SmartFone Flick Fest Gala Awards Final takes place 27 November at Chauvel Cinema Paddington (NSW). The SF3 Kids, Feature Film and SF3 Mini screenings take place at the Actors Centre Australia in Leichhardt on 28 November.
