Reel Life: WA Film Industry News October/November 2022

'Sissy'
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

We are facing down the end of the year – where did it go?

But whatever the time of the year, we never pull down the shutters. . . Life never stops at RevCentral!

Call for entries
Our international call for entries is now open and films are pouring in from the four corners of the globe. . . And we can’t wait to get yours! We don’t have viewing or selection panels so we look at every film ourselves, which is good for you! We love seeing any and all works of any style or form, so don’t do your homework on the bus and get your film to us while its hot! PS we just ranked as one of the Top 100 Best Reviewed Festivals on FilmFreeway for the month of September! This puts us in the top one per cent of more than 10,000 film festivals and creative contests around the world.

Just drop us a line.

XR:WA
We had our best XR:WA year ever in September. Great houses, a fantastic turn out for our two-day games and VR exhibition at the WA Museum - Boola Bardip - and activity across the Perth Cultural Centre. We had 30 or so local, national and international games, 20 plus VR exhibits, more than 20 Augmented Reality works and around 30 talks and workshops. We’d like to thank everyone that came along and look forward to working with the games and immersive sector for 2023. Our 2023 dates, by the way, are July 20-23.

City of Vincent Film Project
We’re incredibly proud of the collaboration we have going with the City of Vincent through the City of Vincent Film Project. Each year, three emerging filmmakers are provided with a $7,000 grant to produce a ten-minute or under non-fiction project set in or around the City of Vincent. Over the last few years, many of the films have had significant success internationally – and continue to do so. If you have an idea and would love to participate, check out our website.

Cinema happenings in Perth

- We can't get enough of collaborating with arts and music events year-round, so we’re also super happy to be working with the Perth International Jazz Festival in presenting a series of brilliant jazz titles on 29-30 October. Featuring the perennial classic 'Jazz On A Summer’s Day', the excellent look into the unique world of Sun Ra 'Sun Ra: A Joyful Noise' plus the Gil Scott-Heron short 'Is That Jazz?', the inspiring look at women in jazz with 'The Girls In The Band' and the work of jazz and the Cold War in 'The Jazz Ambassadors'. Screenings will take place at the Northbridge Piazza screen, all sessions are free and stay tuned for session times.
- Our Opening Night film and a SXSW success, 'Sissy' returns to Luna at the end of the month. A devilishly clever horror sees an influencer encounter her childhood tormentor on a hen’s weekend. Revenge is a dish best shared on Instagram. 'Sissy' tickets from Luna Cinemas.
- A hit at this year's Rev, 'Cherubhead' is an ambitious debut feature from WA filmmaker Sarah Legg. 'Cherubhead' tells the story of a trio of young women staying in the holiday home of socialite Marie Annette who wants to adopt teenager Ellie. What follows is an exploration of power, conflict and identity, set within a quasi-surreal world, and with a thematic nod towards the philosophy of Machiavelli. 'Cherubhead' is a bold statement from the young filmmakers and a testament to homegrown talent. Saturday 29 October at The Backlot – tickets available from Eventbrite.
- The Cunard British Film Festival returns to Perth 19 October-16 November presenting the #BestOfBritish at Palace Cinemas Raine Square, Luna Leederville, Luna on SX and Windsor Cinema. The 2022 line-up showcases the region’s superb filmmaking and acting talent and celebrates some of the most iconic British creations in 'James Bond' and the fashion of Mary Quant.
