Cinema happenings in Perth
Book to Film – The Killing
Stanley Kubrick’s third feature, 'The Killing' (1956), is widely regarded as his first mature film. Based on Lionel White’s 'Clean Break', with dialogue by Jim Thompson, the noir heist movie stars Sterling Hayden and features a complex, non-linear narrative that influenced Quentin Tarantino’s 'Reservoir Dogs'. Kubrick was so committed to the project that he worked unpaid, supported by producer James B. Harris. Though his collaboration with cinematographer Lucien Ballard was tense, it produced striking visuals – particularly a powerful car park scene with Timothy Carey exploring racism. The film ends with a haunting “crime-almost-pays” twist and earned praise for Kubrick’s visionary direction. This session will be presented by John Newman and Michael O’Rourke who will host a discussion after the screening. Sunday 8 June at The Backlot Perth. Tickets from Eventbrite.
A Different Kind of Movie Night
'Such A Resounding Silence' is a powerful French documentary co-directed by actress Emmanuelle Béart, who courageously shares her own story of surviving incest. Featuring testimonies from fellow survivors, the film breaks a long-held silence around one of society’s most hidden issues. With striking visuals and intimate storytelling, it highlights resilience and hope while confronting disturbing realities – including that incest may account for 70–80 per cent of child sexual abuse in Australia. Grace Tame joins a post-screening panel of advocates and survivors for a vital discussion. This is more than a film – it’s a necessary conversation about truth, trauma, and change. Tuesday 10 June at Luna Leederville – tickets available from their website.

'Plan 9 From Outer Space'
Hans Zimmer & Friends: Diamonds In The Desert
A spectacular concert film showcasing Zimmer’s most iconic scores, including music from 'Dune', 'Gladiator', 'Interstellar', 'The Lion King' and more. Filmed across stunning Dubai locations, it pairs breathtaking performances with intimate behind-the-scenes moments. Featuring appearances from Billie Eilish, Christopher Nolan, Denis Villeneuve, Zendaya and others, the film offers rare insight into Zimmer’s creative world. Directed by Emmy-winner Paul Dugdale and executive produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, this is an unforgettable tribute to the power of film music. Saturday 14 June at Windsor Cinema – tickets available from their website.
Trash Classics
'Plan 9 From Outer Space' (1959) is long considered one of the worst movies of all time, by one of the worst directors of all time, Edward D. Wood Jnr. Aliens plot to take over Earth by making the dead rise from the grave. Starring Bela Lugosi (kind of), Vampira and wrestler Tor Johnson. A sci-fi horror camp schlock classic. To quote The Amazing Criswell, “Can your heart stand the shocking facts?” Friday 27 June at Luna Leederville – tickets available from their website.
