Cinema happenings in Perth
Stubbornly Here
Don't miss this locally-made indie film from Western Australia, which recently won Best Feature Film (Budget Under $1m) at the 2024 WA Screen Culture Awards. Set in a small Australian town on the last day of school, 'Stubbornly Here' follows Year 11 students SUNNY, the idealist, and PJ, the abrasive rebel, as they witness several classmates mysteriously vanish at a bus stop. No noise, no explosion – just an empty space where they once stood. A year passes with no answers or solutions, but thousands of children under 18 continue to disappear without a trace. The Backlot Perth – Sunday 12 January 2pm – tickets from Eventbrite.
In The Trenches
The feature-length documentary about the making of 'Before Dawn', a WWI epic. The documentary offers a behind-the-scenes look at the filmmakers' journey to bring the film to the screen. The screening will be introduced by Director Benjamin Scotford, who will also participate in a post-screening Q&A session. This is a fantastic opportunity for fans of cinema and WWI history to gain insight into the creative process, challenges, and inspirations behind the making of the film. The Q&A will likely provide a deeper understanding of the film's production, and is a chance to learn about the artistic and logistical challenges of bringing a WWI epic to life. If you're interested in film production or historical dramas, this screening could offer a fascinating perspective on filmmaking and history. The Backlot Perth – Sunday 5 January 2pm – tickets from Eventbrite.
Classic Matinees Screenings
Come and cosy up at The Windsor every Sunday afternoon for delightful Classic Matinee screenings. These are the films that have defined generations and withstood the test of time – experience them as they were meant to be seen, on the big screen with stunning visuals and sound. Tickets are just $15, so don’t miss out on the chance to relive these icons of cinema. Upcoming screenings include 'Ran' and 'It’s A Wonderful Life'.
The Revival House
At Rev, we’re all about embracing new ideas and fresh experiences, and we couldn’t be more excited about the incredible journey that The Revival House team has taken at the Como Theatre. Perth’s very own revival cinema is bringing the magic of real film back to life, screening classics and hidden gems on 16mm and 35mm prints. It’s been amazing to watch them grow these past months, and incredible to see Perth show up, session after session, to enjoy the true cinematic experience.
It's summer and it’s time to embrace the tradition of enjoying cinema under the stars. Your options are range from parks, to rooftops to cultural hubs with classic faves and new releases.
