Four Indigenous teens living on a reservation in rural Oklahoma desperate to raise enough cash (by any means) to get themselves to the mysterious California to honour their dead mate is the premise behind new comedy series 'Reservation Dogs'.
From co-creators and executive producers Taika Waititi ('Jojo Rabbit', 'Thor: Ragnarok') and Sterlin Harjo ('Mekko', 'Barking Water'), 'Reservation Dogs' is also a breakthrough series for Indigenous representation with every writer, director and series regular on the show Indigenous.
A year after the fifth member of their gang, Reservation Dogs, Daniel died, the four remaining members are still coming to terms with their lost, blaming the reservation they live on and the inherent poverty that surrounds them for their situation.
The crew is made up of Bear Smallhill (D'Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai), their leader though the others really don't see it that way (he's not really a fighter either). Then there's Elora Danan (Devery Jacobs: 'The Order', 'American Gods'), a truer representation of the group's kingpin though she's unaware of her real potential (at the moment).
The emotional charge of the bunch is the smart-mouthed tough girl Willie Jack (Paulina Alexis), with Cheese (Lane Factor) the easy-going one who's simply happy to go along with the others at the expense of his own dreams.
When the quartet decided to adopt Daniel's dream of living in California, so begins their hilarious quest to raise enough money to head west to a faraway land of opportunity.
'Reservation Dogs' will be available on Binge 10 August and Foxtel Showcase 12 August.
