Money Monster Review

Money Monster
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

For those not interested in stocks, Wall Street antics or financial algorithms, then you’re going to love this movie just as much as the people who are!

'Money Monster' delivers an edge-of-your-seat roller coaster ride that will have you holding your breath until the very end.

Cringe-worthy game show star meets financial analyst, Lee Gates (George Clooney) is the host of the popular 'Money Monster' programme which is more media satire than professional journalism. Patty Fenn (Julia Roberts) is long-time Director of the programme. Together they make an unusual but believable team.

Enter Kyle Budwell, an average Joe from Brooklyn who has lost his inheritance from shares that plummeted overnight due to a glitch in the algorithm. Shares which Lee highly recommended. After a few moments of disbelief and uncertainty, it turns out Kyle is the real deal and takes Lee and the crew hostage. Patty is in the booth, talking into Lee’s earpiece as the situation unfolds.

Money MonsterIn this race against time thrill ride, we are taken on a journey of corruption and the dark underground of the finance world, one which Lee himself begins to discover.

Patty and Lee have a rhythmic flow that just works. Throughout the whole film they are in a song and dance of survival, and it is truly entertaining to watch.

You begin to ask yourself if Kyle’s really the evil one here, with his character developing and transforming into a personified representation of everyone who works hard, to lose it to the Man’s scandals and schemes. He’s a victim too.

In a nail-biting race to the finish, the unexpected keeps coming, and the dry humour never ceases. You're left with a gapping mouth as the shocks never break.
