The entertainment industry (and just about everybody who appreciates quality acting) is in mourning today after Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead in his Manhattan apartment.

The 46-year-old was found in his bathroom with a needle in his arm and five empty heroin envelopes (the Oscar winner had checked himself into rehab last year after using heroin).

Hoffman's family have released a statement saying they are "devastated by the loss of our beloved Phil".

"This is a tragic and sudden loss," the statement reads, "and we ask that you respect our privacy during this time of grieving. Please keep Phil in your thoughts and prayers."

Jeff Bridges — Hoffman's co-star in 'The Big Lebowski' — shared his reaction on Facebook: "I'm so shocked, and so sad hearing of Philip Seymour Hoffman's death. I enjoyed playing with him on 'The Big Lebowski'. He was such a wonderful guy, and so damn talented, a real treasure. My thoughts and prayers are with his family."

Other friends and fans in the acting community took to Twitter to share their condolences. {youtube}WzY2pWrXB_0{/youtube}
