Emmy Award winner Matthew Rhys ('The Americans') stars in the title role of HBO's new mini-series 'Perry Mason'.
The series, set in early 1930s Los Angeles, follows the origins of Mason, a low-rent private investigator haunted by his wartime experiences in France and suffering the effects of a broken marriage.LA is booming while the rest of the country recovers from The Great Depression, but a kidnapping gone very wrong leads to Mason exposing a fractured city as he uncovers the truth of the crime.
Alongside Rhys as Perry Mason is John Lithgow as E.B. Jonathan, a personal attorney at the lowest point in his career and a semi-regular employer of Perry Mason. Tatiana Maslany ('Orphan Black') plays Sister Alice, the leader of the Radiant Assembly of God.
American actor Chris Chalk portrays Mason's righthand man Paul Drake, while English actor Juliet Rylance plays Della Street, Perry's secretary. Shea Whigham ('Boardwalk Empire') rounds out the main cast. The ensemble cast also includes veterans Robert Patrick, Stephen Root and Justin Kirk.
Timothy Van Patten – whose directing credits include the 'Game Of Thrones' pilot along with episodes of 'The Sopranos' and 'Boardwalk Empire' – directs and executive produces the series. Robert Downey Jr. is also one of the show's executive producers.
Perry Mason has become one of American fiction's most legendary criminal defence lawyer, based on Erle Stanley Gardner's novels that were adapted for television ('Perry Mason' ran on CBS from 1957-1966 and featured Raymond Burr in the main role) and 30 films.
'Perry Mason' will be available to watch on FOX SHOWCASE as well as stream via Foxtel GO and Foxtel NOW from 22 June.
