Melbourne BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, people of colour) label and events company Yo CiTY has been presenting a weekly summer film series, Flix & Chill, every Saturday at Carlton's Argyle Square.

Yo CiTY Connect, the events arm of the label, brings a combination of film, music, food and drink to the community in a free, all-inclusive family-friendly affair. DJs, live music, delectable food and more.

Plus, screenings of films from local and international BIPOC filmmakers. These screenings include the likes of 2021 award-winning crime drama short film 'Step Back', South African short film 'TINASHE', BlackFeet Films' multi-nominated and award-winning short 'The Truth About Lies' and South African film 'Miracle' from award-winning director Bongekile Ndaba.

Sunset vibes, art, culture, and the opportunity to support small businesses – these are all things you can expect at Flix & Chill.

Before the final event of the summer series this weekend (26 February), Dorcas Maphakela and Percy Dube, co-founders of Yo CiTY and curators of Flix & Chill, list five reasons you should Flix & Chill!

One

Music. The centre of everything, be it work, be it an event, be it you're running down the street, you’re in the gym, in the kitchen. . . Music is the centre of our existence, therefore for Flix & Chill we've made music one of the centrepieces for the event. We have curated different flavours and different textures and different voices and different harmonies which show how diverse Melbourne is, so if you’re down for a good time come down for a jam.

Two

Food. Every good event deserves good food, needless to say there’s nothing as good as finding a new taste and new cuisine, so in the spirit of diverse voices and uniqueness, come and experience the taste of Cameroon.

Three

Films. Who doesn’t love a good flick? We all love a good story, so one more reason for you to come to Flix & Chill is that we've curated some of the most diverse voices you wouldn’t otherwise find in mainstream media or channels, so come through, you might learn a thing or two about somebody else. Did we mention you also get to support these up-and-coming filmmakers both local and international?

Four

Vibes. If you don’t agree with all the other three I’m sure you agree on this one, come down for the vibes. The vibes are super chill, a great environment to meet new friends, make new connections while having a cold beverage or a warm one. No matter who you are, where you are from, you are guaranteed to catch a vibe, so again we say come through.

Five

Community. Community for us means celebrating together and celebrating each other and eating together, getting to know each other, understanding each other. . . You get all of this and more at Flix & Chill. Come through, make some new friends, enjoy the vibes, enjoy the food, enjoy the music and feel the love.

Flix & Chill has run each Saturday in February. The final event will be on 26 February at Argyle Square (Melbourne) with the theme 'Afrika'. DJs Claddy and Brotha Asanti, a live performance from Soulectric, plus films 'Long Distance', 'Oga John', 'Miracle', 'The Independent State Of Nandi', 'FRACTURED', and 'TINASHE’.
