A kaleidoscopic carnival of short films will arrive at Bondi (before hitting the road for a national tour) for the 31st annual Flickerfest International Short Film Festival.
The 2022 programme features 30 world premieres and 65 Australian premieres across its Academy-qualifying Australian, Documentary and International competitions. There are more than 109 inspiring, creative, beautifully-crafted short films from Australia and beyond, as well as a further 110 films featuring across Flickerfest showcase sessions – selected from more than 3,200 entries.
The shorts in competition are vying for the Flickerfest Award for Best International Short Film, the Yoram Gross Award for Best International Animation, the Panasonic Lumix Award for Best Australian Short Film, and the Flickerfest Award for Best Documentary.
Plus, there’s a host of other hotly contested prizes such as the SAE FlickerUp National School Student and Youth competition, and the Rainbow Shorts competition featuring LGBTQIA+ films.
'Stonefish'
Returning in 2021 will be the short film showcases FLiCKERKIDS (for those 6-12 years old), Short Laughs (a comedy programme which will have you in stitches), Love Bites (films about love and relationships) and Best Of Indigenous Shorts (shining a spotlight on the Indigenous talent across the festival).
Highlights for Flickerfest’s 2022 Australian programme include the world premiere of quirky black space comedy ‘The Home Team’ starring Paul McDermott and Tara Morice, the world premiere of black comedy ‘Stonefish’ written by George Pullar and directed by Megan Smart. Also, the New South Wales premiere of intimate sibling drama ‘You Me Before And After’ starring Yael Stone and Emily Barclay, and the Australian premiere of ‘Mask Of The Evil Apparition’ from feature director Alex Proyas.
'The Shaman's Apprentice'
Meanwhile, the International programme features a bunch of films all celebrating their Australian premieres, including ‘A Few Miles South’ starring Toby Jones and Ivanno Jeremiah, Cannes Palme d’Or winner ‘All The Crows In The World’ from Yi Tang. There’s also ‘The Shaman's Apprentice’ by First Nations director Zacharious Kunuk, and UK film ‘Roy’ starring David Bradbury and Rachel Shenton.
Flickerfest will launch with a highlights screening, followed by an exclusive afterparty. The ten-day event will present some of the world’s best short films from all around the world at the relaxed and iconic atmosphere of Bondi Beach until 30 January, culminating in a prestigious awards presentation and closing night celebration.
Flickerfest 2022 is on at Bondi Beach from 21-30 January, before an eight-plus month national tour.
