"I'm just a drover's wife. Cross me and I'll kill ya."
A stark, realistic re-telling of Henry Lawson's iconic short story 'The Drover's Wife', Indigenous writer, director and actor Leah Purcell ('Wentworth', 'Lantana', 'The Proposition') has adapted her play and novel (of the same title) into a new Australian movie.
'The Drover's Wife: The Legend Of Molly Johnson' is set in the remote Snowy Mountains circa 1893.
Molly Johnson (portrayed by Purcell) looks after her four children at their homestead while her husband is away droving cattle. A hardened inhabitant of her surrounds, Molly (who is pregnant) is staunch in protecting her children from all dangers (whether they be nature or humans).
However, when Aboriginal man Yadaka (Rob Collins: 'Extraction', 'Cleverman') who's running from the law disturbs the tranquil peace Molly has carved out a secret they share will soon shatter their lives.
The film also stars Sam Reid ('Lambs Of God'), Jessica de Gouw ('Operation Buffalo', 'Deadline Gallipoli') and newcomer Malachi Dower-Roberts.
'The Drover's Wife: The Legend Of Molly Johnson' lands in Australian cinemas 14 October.
