Brisbane Queer Film Festival Reveals 2017 Programme

Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

From 10-19 March, a sizzling selection of the best and most diverse queer films from Australia and around the world will screen in Brisbane for the newly independent Queer Film Festival.


2017’s brilliantly bold programme has been carefully curated by new directors Shanon King and Justin Marshman to embrace the full gamut of queer cinema, spanning lesbian, gay, bi, trans*, gender diverse and multigenerational films, with special picks for niches and allies of Brisbane’s queer community.

'KIKI' - Opening Night

A dynamic coming of age story about agency, resilience and the transformative art form that is vogueing, 'KIKI' offers riveting and complex insight into the daily lives of a group of LGBTQ youth-of-colour who comprise the “Kiki” sce Following members of the scene as they prepare for and perform at exuberant Kiki balls in New York City, 'KIKI' highlights the infectious joy of these performances, while also foregrounding the scene's urgent social function as an alternative family structure.

Queer Shorts Sessions

A perennial festival sellout favourite, this is a selection of the world’s best queer short films. Programme to be announced closer to the festival.

BQFF Rara'Rara'

'Rara'

South American 'Rara' is about a two-mother family, their challenges and their eldest daughter’s journeyinto adulthood.

'Teenage Kicks'

Craig Boreham’s feature based on his short film 'Drowning' (2009). 17-year-old Miklós' plans to escape his migrant family and run away with his best friend Dan are crushed by the accidental death of his older brother Tomi.

'Women Who Kill'

Commitment-phobic Morgan and her ex-girlfriend Jean are locally famous true crime podcasters obsessed with female serial killers. When Morgan falls in love, they start to suspect her new love interest is a murderer. In the end, Morgan has to examine all the evidence in front of her: Is she just afraid of what it means to be in a relationship or is her life actually in danger?

'Paris 05:59 (Théo and Hugo)'

In a sex club, the bodies of Théo and Hugo meet, recognise each other, become entangled in a passionate embrace. Once the desire and elation of this first moment has passed, the two young men, now sober, wander through the empty streets of nocturnal Paris, having to confront the love they sense blossoming between them.

'Out Run'

The leader of the world’s only LGBT political party dreams of being the first transgender woman in the Philippine Congress. Mobilising working-class transgender hairdressers and beauty queens, the dynamic leaders wage a historic quest. But in a predominantly Catholic nation, rallying for LGBT representation in the halls of Congress is not an easy feat. 'Out Run' provides a unique look into the challenges LGBT people face as they transition into the mainstream and fight for dignity, legitimacy, and acceptance across the globe.

'The Nest'

Bruno, a young soldier who has just run away from the army, travels in search of his brother, who he hasn’t seen in years. He cannot find his brother in the city but discovers a new space where he is free to be himself. Away from home, Bruno finds a new family.

'AWOL'

'AWOL' is a beautiful romantic drama that is both tender and militant in equal measure. Award-winning writer-director Deb Shoval’s debut feature is a clear-eyed love story told with an assured voice and impressive attention to details of a small town life, bolstered by two impressive lead performances from Lola Kirke ('Mistress America') and Breeda Wool ('UnREAL').

Shorts from the Asia Pacific Queer Film Festival Alliance

A tasty selection of the best shorts from around the Australia and beyond. Full programme will be released closer to the event. This screening will launch Brisbane’s own Mary Duong’s new webseries 'Two Weeks'.

BQFF Tomcat'Tomcat'

'Tomcat' - Closing Night

Andreas and Stefan lead a happy and passionate life. Together with their beloved tomcat Moses, they live in a beautiful old house in Vienna’s vineyards. An unexpected and inexplicable event suddenly shakes up the relationship and calls everything into question.

The Brisbane Queer Film Festival takes place from 10-19 March at New Farm Cinemas.
