Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

The Brisbane International FIlm Festival (BIFF) 2024 programme will feature new films from acclaimed and visionary filmmakers.

The 2024 programme includes Pedro Almodovar’s ‘The Room Next Door’ starring Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton, the Palme d’Or-winning ‘Anora’ from Sean Baker, the highly-anticipated ‘Emilia Perez’ from Jacques Audiard, ‘Nightbitch’ starring Amy Adams, and Brady Corbet’s ‘The Brutalist’ starring Adrien Brody, Felicity Jones and Guy Pearce.

Eight cinema locations across Brisbane – Palace Barracks, Dendy Coorparoo, Dendy Portside and Dendy Outdoor, Reading Newmarket, Reading Jindalee, Five Star New Farm and the Angelika Film Centre – will bring something for everyone this October-November.

Opening night is the Queensland premiere of ‘Saturday Night’, a cinematic comedy capturing the 90 minutes of barely-contained chaos leading up to the first broadcast of NBC’s ‘Saturday Night Live’.

And on the other end of the festival, closing things off, is the world premiere of ‘Unbreakable: The Jelena Dokic Story’, promising a heart-wrenching, inspirational finale where the audience will join Jelena and directors Ivan O’Mahoney and Jessica Halloran.

Throughout BIFF will be a number of films, special presentations and red carpet galas, including ‘Rumours’ starring Cate Blanchett, diving into the complex world of personal and professional scandals set against the backdrop of high-stakes media and corporate intrigue; a special presentation of ‘The Brutalist’, an epic tale of art, architecture and ambition; Dakota Johnson and Sean Penn starring in the Queensland premiere of ‘Daddio’; and the Australian premiere of ‘The Piano Lesson’ directed by Malcolm Washington.

Australian stories are of course vital to BIFF – and there are no shortage of those this year. There’s the world premiere red carpet gala of ‘The Red’ where terror takes the form of Rippy, a giant zombie kangaroo; John Jarratt and Vince Colosimo attend the world premiere of ‘Double Or Nothing’; the award-winning ‘The Moogai’, a First Nations psychological horror about a family terrorised by a child-stealing spirit; and the Australian premiere of ‘Sharko’, an intimate look at Mark Graham, regarded as one of the greatest Rugby League players ever.

BIFF will also deliver two curated shorts programmes – Shorts From Home and Shorts From Afar. Plus, in an exciting first, BIFF will also screen a short before every feature film in the programme.

For the horror lovers, BIFF is turning it on for Halloween with a collection of films sure to haunt and delight, including ‘Carnage For Christmas’, ‘I Saw The TV Glow’, ‘Cuckoo’ and ‘The Organist’.

“BIFF 2024 is a celebration of the power of cinema to inspire, challenge, and entertain. This year’s programme reflects the diversity of global storytelling, while also championing the incredible talent here in Australia,” BIFF CEO Luke Wheatley says. “From red carpet galas to intimate documentaries, there’s something for everyone. We’re excited to bring such a dynamic and ambitious lineup to Brisbane’s audiences and look forward to sharing these powerful stories.”
