Brisbane International Film Festival has unveiled a small taste of the 2024 festival offering, with the films that will open and close the celebrations this year.
Brisbane International Film Festival is a celebration of cinema as art, entertainment and industry. It will take place at six cinema locations across Brisbane: Palace Barracks, Dendy Coorparoo and Dendy Outdoor, Reading Newmarket, Five Star New Farm and the Angelika Film Centre.
The film festival was established in 1992, and is Queensland’s largest celebration of film culture. The 2024 programme is set to be another thought-provoking, entertainment offering, along with more than 40 short films from home and abroad, filmmaker Q&As, and industry/student events.
Opening the festival is ‘Saturday Night’.
Directed by Jason Reitman, ‘Saturday Night’ is a hilarious comedy capturing the 90 minutes of barely-contained chaos leading up to the first broadcast of NBC’s ‘Saturday Night Live’. It’s a look at an unruly motley crew of comedians who took over network TV, and their creative process as they prepared for the very first live broadcast. It all happened during the Watergate scandal, the Vietnam War, and a rise in counterculture.
'Unbreakable: The Jelena Dokic Story'
Then, to wrap things up at the end of BIFF, is ‘Unbreakable: The Jelena Dokic Story’.
It’s not just a tennis story – it’s the story of Jelena Dokic’s survival. . . Overcoming extraordinary odds, and her ultimate triumph in the face of poverty, bullying and extreme brutality. She survived as a refugee twice, and she survived on the tennis court and ascended to become world number four. But most importantly, she survived unimaginable abuse from Damir Dokic, her violent father and coach. ‘Unbreakable’ features first-hand testimony from Jelena, Australian and international tennis greats, WTA officials and journalists and more.
Brisbane International Film Festival 2024 is on from 24 October-3 November.
