You'd remember brushing her platinum blonde locks and dressing her up for a quick spin in her convertible with Ken but now, over half a century after the original doll was released, Mattel are teaming up with Sony to create an official live action Barbie movie.
Apparently the film will be a comedy but the rumour-mill is still spinning, with blonde bombshell Kate Upton as a front runner for the role of Barbie. While it's not been confirmed who will play Barbie and what classic outfits she'll be sporting, it won't stop us from speculating who will get the role of our seven year-old selves' dreams.
Barbie has dabbled in over 150 professions and, according to a press release from Sony, she will be inhabiting many of these roles to make a positive impact on those around her.Sony Pictures, who won the rights to the production, supposedly did so by portraying the beloved children's toy as picture of 'empowerment'.
Jenny Bicks, who is responsible for What A Girl Wants and Sex And The City, is set to write the anticipated script, contributing to ideas that the film will ooze themes of female empowerment. Laurie MacDonald and her husband, Walter F. Parkes (Gladiator, The Ring, Men In Black) will produce the Barbie movie, with production due to commence at the end of this year.
Columbia Pictures' president of Production, Hannah Minghella, says "We've always thought that the Barbie story had great potential, but a universe of possibilities opened up when Jenny, Walter and Laurie brought us their unexpected, clever, and truly funny concept. It captures everything that has made Barbie a classic for generation after generation while also standing on its own, establishing Barbie as a truly original screen character. We're confident that Barbie will delight audiences, no matter where her adventures take her".
