You’ve heard of the French and the Italian Film Festivals but you may have been unaware of the Serbian Film Festival. Dear film buffs and foreign film enthusiasts, add this gem to your calendar!
Already in its 13th year, the Serbian Film Festival impresses audiences time and time again with its outstanding showcase of the latest Serbian cinematography.
The festival opened in Brisbane on Friday night (25 October) in HOYTS Sunnybank, with a screening of the film Ice. Interweaving captivating cinematography techniques to poetically portray one family’s story of both love and tragedy, the film beautifully captured the picturesque Serbian landscapes and countryside around Kragujevac.
Stars of the Serbian film industry, Ice actress Olga Oldanović (known as Serbia’s Meryl Streep) and Nenad Dukić, renowned film critic and the festival’s film selector, were special guests.
This is the third year Brisbane has held the festival. Brisbane’s Serbian Film Festival organiser Danica Majstorović Eather said Friday night was a testament to its fast growing interest in the community. “The opening night buzzed with three generations of Serbian-Australians amongst local guests from the broader public, including Amanda Slack-Smith, Assistant Curator at Australian Cinematheque, Violetta Tosić from the Brisbane International Film Festival and Ljiljana Sorban from 4EB Serbian Radio,” Majstorović Eather said.
For the Australian public, this is a chance to experience the latest Serbian cinematography on the silver screen. “This is an opportunity to see new releases, all in English sub-titles, which enable a glimpse into contemporary issues with universal themes, as well as historical themes relevant to Serbia. SFF enables greater understanding between people and acts like a cultural bridge,” Majstorović Eather said.
Over the coming days the festival features an exceptional selection of eight contemporary Serbian films. For those that like drama, documentary and comedy, especially classic Serbian black humour, the festival has you covered.
