5 TV Series That Make You Feel Happy When The World Seems Grim

Sunny Luwe
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and some beyond.

A 2025 Queensland Music Awards finalist and proud Wayilwan woman, Sunny Luwe's newest single is 'Letter To The Future'.

A heartfelt message for the next generation, it's a gentle but urgent call to take action on the climate crisis, wrapped in acoustic simplicity and deep emotional resonance.

Originally written in 2020 when she was a full-time teacher, Sunny completed the song last year with her husband and fellow musician Matthew Collins (WHARVES, okmattcollins).

"Around the time of COVID, I was really impressed to see the world come together to address the pandemic – and I wondered, 'when will we do the same thing about the climate crisis for the next generation'," Sunny shares.

Accompanying the single is a commitment to climate-conscious music making. Sunny has offset the carbon emissions from the creation and promotion of this release through the Gondwana Rainforest Trust, and has created a how-to guide to help fellow musicians do the same.

Selected this year as Green Music Australia's inaugural Board Observer, Sunny is not only writing about the climate crisis; she's modelling real, tangible solutions for the music industry.

"Carbon offsetting this project is something I am very passionate about – I dream of living in a world where how we care for the environment is at the forefront of each project and endeavour.

"I also realised that I can step into my own power and be that change by offsetting my single and educating people about it through the release."

With 'Letter To The Future', Sunny hasn't just released a song; she's offering reflection, a call to action, and a guide forward. Take a moment to pause, listen, and commit.

Here, Sunny shares some of her favourite TV series when the world outside gets a little too grim, which is becoming all to regular. "So 2025 has been a breeze yeah? Haha, I know right? It's been A LOT.

"I've had some big emotions and feels about a lot of things this year – from caring too much about politics in the USA to feeling helpless whilst children starve in Gaza. Then throw in a cyclone, floods and cost-of-living-crisis – ah, what a time to be alive.

"Sometimes (and probably more often than I should) I love to pop on my favourite series and check out from it all. Here some of my fave series to make you feel better when the world feels grim."

Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey

Neil deGrasse Tyson's take on Carl Sagan's original. Pure wonder. This is a series I have gone back to so many times. I love how Neil communicates science and the sheer wonder of our world.

On Apple TV in Australia, Neil takes you on his 'ship of the imagination' to explore the expansive of our universe – from the outermost edges of our universe, to the birth of our sun, the make-up of our cells and atoms, this series can only be summed up with the words 'pure wonder'.

One of my favourite moments from this series is our universe's calendar, where humans have only existed for the final few seconds. How profound to think every moment of human existence can fall into the tiniest moment if you zoom out enough?!

Future Council

Now. . . I'll be honest – I haven't seen this yet, but I will already 1,000 per cent vouch for this. I love Damon Gameau and will vouch for his other films and series: '2040', 'That Sugar Film' and 'The War On Waste' series; it's informative, it's scary, it's inspiring and empowering.

I love Damon's perspective and really admire his practical leadership when tackling the wicked problem of the climate crisis. For the 'Future Council' film, Gameau has held space for a child-lead, adult-supported movement – encouraging young people to be leaders and advocate for the earth, each other and really, all living things.

Parks and Recreation

My swansong. I adore this series, the characters, the cast, the journeys each of them go on, and after working very briefly in local government, I can very much appreciate how it humorously showcases the slowness of the beast that is government.

My fave moment (without giving too much away)? A tie between Leslie having a library named in her honour and when the team recorded '5,000 Candles In The Wind' and Duke Silver let her soar.

Daisy Jones & The Six

If you love Fleetwood Mac, '70s fashion, '70s rock, Woodstock, hippies, vintage threads this series is perfection. Look. No. Further. I honestly credit a lot of this series for my own personal style. I'm manifesting the casts' wardrobe for my life. Afghan coats. Laced boots. Flares. Corduroy. More corduroy please!

Plus the music is great too. I think Mumford & Sons did a lot of the songwriting for this and the music literally sounds like it was another Fleetwood Mac album. It's epic songwriting. Please message me your 'thanks' after you've binged x.

[Ed's note: I concur with Sunny; this series is must-watch for any music lover of any era and aficionados of the 1970s fashion and culture; best watched on a wide-screen TV – definitely not on your phone.]

The Good Place

One of my new fave series to stream. I love character growth and development in a series. The best example being from 'The Office' – I love how you detest who Michael is at the start; he is so flawed and so easy to hate, yet so many seasons later you love him and you're so proud of him.

This is what I love about 'The Good Place'. I love how I fall in love with Eleanor throughout the series and am balling my eyes out for her by the final episode. It's really beautiful. So combine a great character journey x death x the afterlife x morality + ethics + great comedic writing and you get this really wonderful, witty conundrum called 'The Good Place.'

"So now you have a heap of go-to-feel-good-series to binge until the world feels safer again. I feel you. Also I can't sign off without plugging some of my other faves: 'The Office', 'Brooklyn 99', 'The War On Waste', 'The Marvellous Mrs Maisel' and 'E-Motion' (on Gaia) were all very close runner ups. Peace and love, Sunny Luwe x."
