Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Storytelling is the essence of filmmaking and in South Australia the film industry has well and truly got the hang of finding stories; ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous for our viewing pleasure.

This year’s South Australian Film Award nominees have uncovered insightful and amazing tales of human experience and have also pushed the boundaries of creative fiction. Sarah Martin from SA Screen Awards looks at the Top 5 nominees and discovers the creative breadth of the state:

Last days

Exploring familial life in the suburbs on the last day on Earth, 'The Worst Alien In The World' is the final episode of a sitcom that's run too long, which culminates in abuse, neglect and the end of the world.

Losing it

Sometimes the thing that pushes you over the edge can be quite simple. In short-film 'NUTS', a meek and alienated office worker’s peaceful lunch break is shattered when an obnoxious youth eats his peanuts. Fed up with being bullied, he decides to stand up to the youth.

Mystical creations

Imagination runs free with animated recipe for fun, 'Peppercorn Babycorn Unicorn'. A young girl spends the weekend with her imposing grandmother. While left unattended she hijacks her grandmother’s cauldron and attempts to make a unicorn.

Life on the land

'Northern Acres' is a documentary that captures the beauty of a farming property between Hallett and Jamestown, South Australia, through gorgeous images and the story of an 82-year-old farmer who calls it home.

A will to dance

Michelle Ryan toured the world, dancing with the Australian Dance Theatre. The diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis changed everything and 'Michelle’s Story' follows her inspirational journey to overcome adversity and forge a new path. First time Director Meryl Tankard draws on her personal connection with Michelle to dig deep into this personal tale.

The 2016 SASA Gala Awards take place at Mercury Cinema 13 May.
