5 On Screen Female Characters That Inspire Abbe May

Abbe May
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

After two years in recovery after a dangerous seizure on tour in 2013, multiple ARIA, AIR and AMP nominee and 18-time WAMi winner Abbe May returns to life better and bolder than ever with 'Are We Flirting?', the first taste from the forthcoming longplayer, 'Bitchcraft'.

“At one point I wanted to die because I was in so much agony,” Abbe says. “I was lucky I had the support and will to get well again because now I feel supercharged. I'm actually so grateful the whole horror happened. I had to access my inner bitch in order to cut myself loose. That’s why the new album is called 'Bitchcraft'. It would never exist if I hadn’t channeled the bitch.”

Ahead of show dates in July, Abbe list five on-screen female characters that have inspired her.

DSI Stella Gibson - The Fall

Portrayed by Gillian Anderson. Because she's a not so subtle embodiment of female empowerment, which is great to me because there is no need to be apologetic about being a powerful woman. She is brave, real, unashamedly sexy, intelligent, competent, powerful, she knows what she wants and generally gets it and says awesome shit like this: “The media loves to divide women into virgins and vamps, angels or whores. Let's not encourage them.” I truly think, when in doubt all you have to ask yourself is: “What would Stella Gibson do?”

Ilana Wexler and Abbi Abrams - Broad City

Portrayed by Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson. Because they just love each other. Totally nutty, self-absorbed, 20-somethings who never fail to be amusing while navigating life in New York City. The crux to the appeal of the characters is that underneath all of the goofery and self contentedness, they have a very genuine friendship.

It's an important aspect to female representation on screen that is often missed: women are at their best when they care for and support each other instead of cutting each other down. llana and Abbi do it with aplomb even if the rest of their lives seem to be an endlessly funny misadventure.

FBI Special Agent Dana Scully - The X Files

Portrayed by Gillian Anderson. Her balance between logic and open-mindedness is extremely… hawwwt. Also, Google: '90s ladies power suits'... hawwwwttt.

Linda Belcher - Bob's Burgers

Linda is a woman who is passionate about EVERYTHING, but in particular she is passionate about family and musical-dinner theatre. She is warm and funny and fierce. She is an absolute triumph of a woman. She also wears the shit out of a spice rack.

Cherilyn 'Cher' Horowitz - Clueless

Portrayed By Alicia Silverstone. She reminds us that teenagers CAN have taste, style AND compassion but that we shouldn't let them drive on the freeway.
