For a band that have already won the flattery/ heart of Cara Delevingne, built a local cult following with supports slots for The Cribs, Sticky Fingers and Wolfmother, and even had their song in a Ford Ranger TV commercial, you’d think The Ninjas would be content.
Fortunately, the world’s sneakiest band are not yet satisfied and have returned with their new single 'Morphine', which was hand-picked by renowned producer Steve Schram (Little Red, Little Birdy, Cat Empire, San Cisco), and recorded as part of winning The Seed Fund’s 'It’s all about the song' grant, awarded to them late last year.
Ahead of a trip to Brisbane later this month, the Sunshine Coast rockers share their favourite ninja films. Because. Obviously.
Mortal Kombat
Written by Ed Boon and John Tobias (the guys behind the games), this is a classic from the '90s. Maybe not the greatest NINJA movie ever, but I've loved MK ever since Nintendo/ Sega days. 'Three unknowing martial artists are summoned to a mysterious island to compete in a tournament whose outcome will decide the fate of the world.' Enough said, though this also is the prelude to our made up 'Scorpion' film.{youtube}JHIfHL5UgFs{/youtube}
Scorpion (The Movie)
So we made this one up, but it's one ninja movie that needs to be made. Yes, we are talking Scorpion from the 'Mortal Kombat' video game. Once a member of the Shirai-Ryu clan of ninjas, Scorpion is killed by the Elder Sub-Zero in battle, while Quan Chi (a menacing sorcerer) slaughters his clan and family. Scorpion accepts resurrection from Quan Chi but at the cost of being Quan Chi’s bitch for all eternity.The Ninjas
Scorpion returns as a hell-spawned spectre, inexorably seeking vengeance against those responsible for the destruction of his clan and the death of his family. Though under the control of the evil Quan Chi, he must patiently wait to seek his vengeance. To be directed by Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez, and starring Richard Gere (comeback role).
Beverly Hills Ninja
Starring the late, great comic genius Chris Farley. 'Beverly Hills Ninja' is an all-time classic that always comes out on a rainy day. We recommend watching it with a bottle of Captain Morgan Spice Gold rum or shared with your friends around a bowl of healthy greens.{youtube}L7wjZZDmyhY{/youtube}
3 Ninjas
A classic from 1992. This was the shit going up; three kids trained to be ninjas by their Mr. Miyagi looking 'grandpa'. FBI, fart gags, pretty sure Hulk Hogan was in it. Or was that the sequel?{youtube}jF_9prQFtik{/youtube}
Double Dragon
'In post-apocalyptic California, brothers Billy Lee and Jimmy are highly trained martial artists living in the ravaged city of New Angeles. The pair have been trained by Satori, who took them in after their parents died. When Satori finds herself pursued by evil overlord Koga Shuko, who's intent on possessing her mystical dragon medallion, the siblings are charged with protecting it from Shuko and his henchmen.'{youtube}3z1a7GlGCAs{/youtube}
Tbh, the movie is pretty cringey if you watch it now, but back in 1994 it was a different story. Also used to love playing the game on my Sega Mega Drive. It was one of the very few games that I could play co-op with my older brother, rather than beating him at competitive games and then copping a beatdown afterwards.
The Ninjas join Until Home for a joint single launch at The Milk Factory (Brisbane) 24 June.
