A noted filmmaker with awards under his belt for a number of internationally acclaimed short films, Melbourne alt-rocker George Kalpa has shared his favourite Ingmar Bergman and Liv Ullmann movies.
5. ‘Shame’ (1968). Even in this tragically-dark war drama set in an unspecified country, Liv Ullmann still manages to look fantastic.
4. ‘Scenes From A Marriage’ (1973). A fascinating study of two people caught in an unhealthy relationship. Why on earth would Erland Josephson leave her?
3. ‘Face To Face’ (1976). This film offers a glimpse into the life of a doctor who ends up becoming a patient in the strangest way you can imagine. The scene in which Liv's character has a breakdown during her monologue in the hospital is fucking incredible.
2. ‘Cries And Whispers’ (1972). Two sisters and their maid are watching their neglected sister die from an illness in an unsettling mansion in the 1800s. Liv plays the mother and daughter. The red walls in the house are messed-up.
1. ‘Persona’ (1966). A physiological masterpiece about two women, one of who cannot speak. The opening credits alone are one of the most intriguing five minutes ever put to film.

The lead single from George Kalpa’s debut album, ‘MODE’, is ‘Leave That Street Alone’. “For me the song is about a young man having a bad time,” George explains.

“He deals with his situation in the only way that he can. He overshoots a realisation and just goes for it. But it can mean anything to anyone, it’s all about connecting with art in your own way.”
