So enamoured with the US series 'Stranger Things' was Adelaide electronic producer Luke Million, earlier this year he released a remix of the show's soundtrack. Cool.
It's fair to call Luke a little obsessive when it comes to quirky, cinematic remixes. He was the guy who released the most-excellent 'Arnold' a few years ago, a track that sampled the 1970s body builder who'd later become California Governor.
So we asked Luke to supply his favourite soundtracks of all time. We think he nailed it.
1. 'Blade Runner': Vangelis
This is probably my favourite movie score of all time and it introduced me to Vangelis and a whole new world of synthesizers. Vangelis created the perfect soundscape for the dystopian future imagined by Ridley Scott{youtube}ccJJ0uxigVA{/youtube}
It sounds futuristic, otherworldly with the Yamaha CS-80, Roland VP330 and Rhodes Electric Piano providing the majority of the score.
2. 'Apocalypse Now': Carmine Coppola and Francis Ford Coppola
First thing that stood out for me was the use of 'The End' by The Doors at the very start of this film totally setting the tone of futileness.{youtube}CIrvSJwwJUE{/youtube}
The incidental score composed by Carmine and his father took it further, creating a sense of impending doom with soaring moog synths and dark textures that just make you feel uneasy.
3. 'Kung Fury': Mitch Murder and Various Artists
Over the top '80s action with gratuitous synthesizers… this soundtrack is the real deal. There is even a David Hasslehoff feature for the title track. It has the perfect blend of arpeggiators, FM synths and classic drum machines.{youtube}ZTidn2dBYbY{/youtube}
4. 'Escape From New York': John Carpenter
There are many John Carpenter film scores I could list but my top pick is 'Escape From New York'. Carpenters DIY approach to music in his own movies results in something simple but yet so powerful. Plenty of Linn LM-1 and Sequential Circuts Prophet 5 all over this.{youtube}f1JYDmo19to{/youtube}
5. 'Drive': Cliff Martinez
The score is full of retro, '80s synth-soundscapes and arpeggiators which capture the mood of the film's antihero. The opening credits feature 'Nightcall' by Kavinsky, which is one of my favourite songs of all time.{youtube}LDCt1V8T3To{/youtube}
