The 25th annual Revelation Perth International Film Festival returns, for a 10-day celebration of the best independent global and local cinema.
Throughout the 2022 programme is 26 feature films, 16 full-length documentaries, and more than 50 short documentaries, from 29 countries.
“Over its 25 years, Rev has developed into an international screen culture leader,” Festival Director and founder Richard Sowada says.
“So few, if any, have the richness of programme as Rev from live performance, moving image art, commissioning and producing films, our own streaming service (revstream.com.au) and the outstanding films themselves. It's humbling and greatly rewarding to have such a positive impact on the WA screen sector and wider community.”
Aussie slasher 'Sissy' begins proceedings. There are films throughout Rev coming from Rotterdam, Berlin, SXSW, Venice and Locarno Film Festivals.
'Flux Gourmet' from Peter Strickland is a deliciously deadpan comedy, 'Saint-Narcisse' from Bruce LaBruce follows a handsome, narcissistic young man who discovers the existence of his twin brother. Then there's 'Flesh For Frankenstein', from legendary filmmaker Paul Morrissey.
'Luzifer'
From the USA comes feature films celebrating historic moments and simple snapshots of modern life, with the likes of '18 ½', 'Paris Is In Harlem', 'The Humans', and 'Slaughterhouse-Five'. Meanwhile, there are contemporary Australian features spotlighting existential dramas and innovative storytelling, like 'Shadow', 'The Lonely Spirits Variety Hour', A Delicate Fire', 'A Pencil To The Jugular' and 'Lonesome'.
A little closer to home are microbudget West Australian features shining bright throughout the 2022 Rev. There's 'Cherubhead' from 19-year-old director Sarah Legg, the self-made and self-funded 'Edward & Isabella' from Albany's Adam Morris, and 'Bassendream', a tale of friendship and family awash with '90s nostalgia from Tim Barretto.
Fantasy, sci-fi and genre enthusiasts will rejoice with French sci-fi film 'Planet X' and Austrian supernatural horror drama 'Luzifer'. But if dark comedy is more your speed, look no further than 'Heavens Above' exploring the impact of miracles on modern society, and 'Hole In The Head', a sophisticated and darkly comic exploration of the meeting point of traumatised memory and image technologies, from Dean Kavanagh.
The documentary offering is made up of films such as 'A House Made Of Splinters', 'Navalny', 'The Assassination & Mrs Paine', 'Raw! Uncut! Video', and 'Life On The Farm'.
Art and live performance lovers will appreciate 'Make Me Famous', a madcap romp through '80s NYC's art scene.'Mike Mignola: Drawing Monsters' is a feature-length documentary about the creation of Mike's 'Hellboy' comic universe.
'When The Camera Stopped Rolling'
Film buffs and music fans must see 'When The Camera Stopped Rolling', a moving, complex story eight years in the making and a documentary from cinematographer Jane Castle, about her filmmaker mother. 'In The Court Of The Crimson King' is a dark, comic film about the complicated and fractious history of prog-rock titans King Crimson. Also, an all-female thrash metal band is explored in 'Sirens'.
'Different voices' are explored in a special arm of Rev's programming. Three short documentaries – 'Acts For The Invisible', 'The Dreamlife Of Georgie Stone' and 'Vanitas' all hit the screen.
Locally created content will be celebrated at The Backlot for Westralia Day, and a programme of panels, discussions and workshops will take place in the form of Industrial Revelations, in person and online.
Everything comes to a close with a celebration of local, emerging filmmakers with Get Your Shorts On! and City Of Vincent Films.
