SAE Creative Media Institute student Robbie Little is using his audio and production skills to give back to the community. Understanding the life-changing power of music, Robbie is a mentor at Brisbane’s Studio G, teaching studio and audio techniques to participants with autism.
Supported by Autism Queensland, Studio G offers a ten-week workshop programme, in a range of creative fields, to young adults on the autism spectrum. The programme aims to support participants in the transitional period from secondary schooling to the workplace or further education.
Robbie combined his work with Studio G and his studies at SAE to create a tutorial series as part of his major project in the Bachelor of Audio.
“I created ten instructional videos with content covering techniques such as mixing and setting up signal flow, through to how to make music in Ableton software. It can be difficult to teach the complexities of audio and sound, so I made them easy to understand,” Robbie says.

Like many businesses this year, Studio G has had to pivot their delivery to an online model and Robbie has been working hard to adapt the content to this context.
For Robbie, he believes he gets as much out of his work at Studio G as he gives; “I learn so much from the programme as well. I’m there to offer my technical expertise, but also just to have a chat and socialise. It’s a really rewarding experience.”
Prior to enrolling in the Bachelor of Audio at SAE Institute, Robbie had commenced degrees in environmental engineering and IT science. Finding himself unfulfilled, Robbie turned to what he loved and decided to pursue a career in audio.
Now, Robbie is fully immersing himself in the field he loves – working in live sound, interning with a studio and mentoring with Studio G, all while completing his studies with SAE.
General Manager of SAE Australasia Matt Evans says it is inspiring to witness students not only finding their passion, but also giving back to the community.
“The work Robbie does in collaboration with Studio G is remarkable. At SAE we see a lot of our students evolving their creative specialties to support the community in innovative ways. It is part of our vision. . . To see SAE students developing rewarding careers in the creative industries,” Mr Evans says.
Enrolments are now open for SAE Creative Media Institute's February 2021 intake. Find out more at the SAE website.
