Facebook released its Year In Review report yesterday, a round up of the past 12 months' most talked about topics.
The social media giant used the data amassed from hashtags, posts and check-ins to track global conversation trends as well as country-specific buzzwords.
The big word in Australian conversation topics this year was "vote", with much discussion surrounding the federal election. "Kevin Rudd", "Tony Abbott" and "election" all made it into the "Top Ten Most Talked About Topics" list. Other buzz terms include "Kate Middleton," "cricket," "Big Brother" and the "Goods Services Tax." It's a contrast to the 2012 list, which was topped by "One Direction" and "The Hunger Games."
The Duchess of Cambridge also featured in the "Most Buzzed About Public Figures" in Australia, followed by Kevin Rudd, Tony Abbott, Julia Gillard and Miranda Kerr.
The top ten most mentioned topics globally this year include the birth of Prince George, the Harlem Shake, Miley Cyrus and the American Presidential Election. The recent passing of Nelson Mandella also made it into the year's most talked about stories, despite the news breaking less than a week ago.
The Year In Review report also covered the most buzzed about sports in Australia, with cricket, rugby and NRL all making it into the top ten. Sport also dominated the "Most Social Australian Landmarks" list , a compendium of the most checked in places in Australia. Melbourne Cricket Ground took the top spot, followed by the Crown, Melbourne and the Etihad Stadium.
