EAT STREET MARKETS – Hamilton, Review, Friday May 30
So after an outing to the insanely popular Eat Street Markets I'm left with an overwhelming feeling of surprised disappointment. There were copious food outlets, plus some average clothes, stacks of soaps and other knick knacks. Much of the food on offer looked mundane and unimpressive (and there was TRUCKLOADS on display). Potato on a Stick, seriously?
From the smorgasboard of savoury choices, it was decided that we needed to sample a few of the Latin American outlets. Howzat Burger was the standout (Mexican Wave burger, bottom right). Sweet Pig (slider) from Koma Sliders was next best. The Cronut failed to meet the hype – too greasy.
To finish our night of gluttony, we had some Buffalo Wings (to use the term loosely) from some Pizza & Wings joint and it was subpar at best (soggy, tasteless and did I mention tasteless?). We ended up eating only four pieces of the ten we ordered, the wheelie bin devoured the rest.
Since we are nothing if not intrepid and dedicated eaters, we would like to go back and try Jake & Ella's Italian (which catered to our collective sweet tooth), one of the Malaysian outlets and the Chinese BBQ joint. Would bypass everything else and go early to miss the hordes of families who bring their kids and dogs.
Shout-out to the guys with the Herbal Tea stand, their concoctions were just what I needed to wash away the alleged Buffalo Wings I had previously (half) eaten and their hustle was undeterred.
Hopes were definitely high prior to leaving home but unfortunately I was left feeling underwhelmed after doing a lap and realising that was it. To be fair though, some places had to be skipped over this time due to stomach capacity being on FULL. Perhaps with a better arrival time to avoid the masses and an emptier stomach, the next Eat Street adventure will be more satisfying.
