BREAKING: Sydney And Melbourne Are Expensive

Sydney is expensive

In news that will surprise absolutely nobody who has ever lived in them, Sydney and Melbourne have ranked in the top six of the Economist's list of the world's most expensive cities.

The magazine's bi-annual Worldwide Cost Of Living Survey ranked Sydney as the fifth most expensive city in the world, with Melbourne one spot behind. (Honestly not sure if Sydneysiders would be proud of beating Melburnians in this list or not.)

The survey, carried out by the magazine's 'intelligence unit' (we definitely don't have one of those), compared more than 400 prices across 160 products and services (including food, drink, clothing, household supplies, rents, transport, utility bills and recreational costs) in 131 cities.

Singapore claimed top spot, followed by Paris, Oslo and Zurich. Perth and Brisbane came in at equal 21st, while Adelaide came in at 37.

Somewhat surprisingly, New York is just the 26th most expensive city in the world. Mumbai, Karachi, New Delhi, Damascus, Kathmandu, Algiers, Bucharest, Panama City, Jeddah, and Riyadh — cities with "well documented security issues or domestic unrest" — came in as the ten least expensive cities in the world, meaning that living in those places is essentially free (and occassionally terrifying).

Get rich or die Mumbai-in', guys.
