It’s Sunday morning (13 March) and the heavens have opened with rain on the day of the 16th annual Big Gay Day at The Wickham Hotel.
I am praying for sunshine, and it’s almost like a miracle from the gay gods when finally the clouds part and a fabulous rainbow crosses the sky; it’s definitely a sign for what is to come next and it’s time to join the party!
Covered in endless amounts of glitter, I arrive at Big Gay Day and are greeted by a sea of absolutely gorgeous men and women, covered in rainbows, paint, feathers, sequins and glitter for days.
I absolutely always love Big Gay Day, and this year the event is superbly executed once again, including three dazzlingly entertaining stages, packed with a fantastic line-up.
The festival main stage featured all of our favourites including: Courtney Act, DJ Sammy, Pam Ann, Paulini and returning freshly from the jungle, Havana Brown, all performing sparklingly wonderful shows throughout the day and night.
The Wickham’s regular event, 'OUT on Sunday' featured this year at Big Gay Day with a colourful party in the beer garden, bringing in the sunset with Tim Persley playing all of the glorious pop, house and disco favourites looking over a deliciously bursting dancefloor.
The Bear Cave stage upstairs inside the Wickham was like stepping into a swirling river of glittering confetti, with every dance move kicking it all around like sparkling rain. I’m not quite sure if was the Brisbane humidity, or if everyone was feeling way too sexy, but it was getting seriously hot with a whole lot of sweaty bodies dancing all around.
Venturing back downstairs to the main stage, I can’t wait to see the gorgeous diva Paulini as she kicks the street off into the night with a bang and her incredible vocals soar beautifully across the crowd.
The highlight of the main stage is certainly Havana Brown, who dominates the stage with her explosive electro-pop DJ, vocal and dance set, proving that this stunning performer is a true triple-threat of amazing talent, sending the street dancing well into the humid night.
The street is full of smiling, gorgeous faces, and I really do believe that this is one of Brisbane’s best street parties. The festival has an incredible line-up, but on top of this it brings together Brisbane’s amazing LGBT community in an open, expressive and safe way, with a whole lot of love in the air.
I love how many new friends that I have made and it’s safe to say that my Facebook friends list has spiked since Sunday. Hello new best friends!
Despite the rain, dancing and glitter injuries, this year has been another wonderful success and a splendid way to spend a fabulous Sunday afternoon with some of Brisbane’s most beautiful people. Happy Gay Day!
