Ariel Ilijeva is lead vocalist for the darkly splendid, emerging act, Ariel.
A three-piece rock outfit, Ariel’s cabaret-influenced contralto vocals soar over the band's fluid transitions and explore glam rock and ethereal electric folk tunes.
Ariel’s spent much of her time enjoying the lovely corners of Brisbane, and offers up some of her favourite local titbits, so you can enjoy them too.
1. Hidden Treasure - Toowong Cemetery
Views of the city, picturesque architecture, massive and mostly empty of people (except the dead-and-buried kind) – my favourite spot for a quiet afternoon picnic. Better than a park.2. Weird And Wonderful Cinema At GoMA
This is a fantastic ongoing programme - sometimes it's even free! Mostly there will be a theme running for a couple of months. I wrote 'Lota's Lament' after seeing 1932's 'Island Of Lost Souls', when they were doing monster flicks.3. Feast
It was a struggle not to fill this list with eateries. For savouries, try Asian restaurants Fat Dumpling or Wagaya in the Valley; for sweets, Teneriffe's La Macelleria Gelateria is addictive.4. Enjoy The Great Outdoors In The Big City
Ride the CityCat on the river at twilight, or walk through Roma Street Parklands or somewhere else green. Once I had a two-person picnic in a gigantic tree somewhere in the city.5. Check Out Live And Local Art
West End is great for this, the Valley can be too – my band is performing at a really interesting event this month, called 'Velvet Helmet'. It's a cabaret smorgasbord, with an underground attitude but impressive production. Exciting stuff!Catch Ariel at Velvet Helmet on 12 August (Show Day Holiday) at the New Globe Theatre in Brisbane.
