5 Cheap Eats Under $10 In Melbourne With Wild Meadows

Wild Meadows

If you're a struggling musician (or anyone for that matter looking for a cheap feed) living in or headed to Melbourne, garage band Wild Meadows share their Top 5 places in Melbourne to score a meal under $10. Bless.

1. The top honours must go to Hectik Kebab

This van is conveniently located right next door to where we rehearse in Richmond. It’s cheap, quality and has fuelled Wild Meadows’ rehearsals for as long as we can remember. Go for ‘the works with double chilli’ or, as we prefer to call it, the ‘James Ross Special’. Precise address unknown.

2. Hanabi Sushi. 331 Smith St, Fitzroy

This one’s right near where we recorded at Red Door Sounds in Collingwood. You can do it for under $10 if you’re in the market for a few, modest, sushi hand-rolls. But if your tastes more align with that of our producer (that is, 15 pieces of pure sashimi – but hey, he does an AMAZING job so you know, whatever works) you might want to save a few more pennies.

3. Trang Bakery and Café. 382 Smith St, Collingwood

This was another favourite during our recording sessions. Simply put, one of the best banh mi in Melbourne (and that’s saying something). $10 will get you a long way.

4. Bang Bang Vietnamese. 337 High St, Northcote

Continuing on the Vietnamese trend, this one really hits the spot when you’re in the area before a gig at Northcote Social Club.

It’s in a good location and has some amazing home-made chilli oil you can add as you please. A pho will set you back $11, so it’s maybe a stretch for this list, but for a great time I’d recommend the crispy pork with spicy salt ($15) split between two – to die for.

5. ALDI chicken nuggets. Great variety, great value

No matter what size box you get, it will still probably be under $10. Understandably, on the very rare occasion there may be a day where your regular chicken nuggets just don't tickle your fancy - maybe you are looking for  something a little more experimental? - this is probably (not) why ALDI decided to stock dinosaur-shaped chicken nuggets.

The perfect solution for these emergency situations. Get 'em in ya.

Wild Meadows play Oxford Art Factory (Sydney) 20 April. Their self-titled album is available now.
