Overnight, fledgling Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios toppled the world’s number one tennis player, Rafael Nadal, at Wimbledon’s All England Club to reach the quarter finals. But who the heck is Nick Kyrgios?
Well, he’s a 19-year-old from Canberra who turned professional last year. Prior to his current Wimbledon run — four straight wins — Nick had an overall record of 3-7 on the ATP World Tour (the highest professional tennis circuit for men). He also defeated top 10 seed Richard Gasquet en route to the quarters. Kyrgios is currently ranked #144 on the ATP rankings.
He won the Boys' Singles event at the 2013 Australian Open and the Boys' Doubles event at the 2013 Wimbledon Championships. Kyrgios made his Davis Cup debut for Australia against Poland last September.
His win against Nadal is the first time a teenager has beaten a world No 1 at the majors since 2005. Strangely enough, the last player to achieve this feat was Nadal against tennis legend Roger Federer. “You’ve got to believe you can win the match and I did,” Kyrgios said. “I think I was in a bit of zone out there, I played some extraordinary tennis, I served at a really good level out there.”
Kyrgios next match is against Canadian eighth seed Milos Raonic, with the winner to advance to Friday’s semi final.
