Queenslanders, hang your heads in shame — your crocodile-eating snake has been upstaged by an alligator-eating otter.
The internet went crazy earlier this week for the Lake Moondarra snake that ate a crocodile, but it's got nothing on this otter from the Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge in De Leon Springs, Florida.
The seemingly cuddly critter — usually the most adorable highlight of any trip to the zoo — actually ate the alligator way back in 2011, but presumably its publicist managed to keep the photos under wraps for a while. Either that, or the Wildlife Refuge was waiting for Crocodilia-eating fever to strike before they cashed in their chips. Either way, they've posted the photos, taken by Geoff Walsh, to their Facebook page, and they are properly terrifying.
In a comment on their album, the Wildlife Refuge confirmed that the otter eventually pulled the alligator up on the bank "and proceeded to consume it, as evidenced by crunching noises". Contrary to appearances, otters are apparently "the apex predator of many freshwater habitats".
It certainly puts a new spin on one of the internet's favourite factoids.
Strength in numbers. Even when they're sleeping.
