The Supanova Universe Returns To Brisbane & Adelaide In 2016

Nathan Fillion as Captain Malcolm Reynolds in 'Firefly'

Supanova is the sort of madcap, wondrous adventure that’s easy to fall in love with.

For the uninitiated, Supanova is a weekend to celebrate fandom and the creative sorts who turn us into blithering, emotional wrecks about fictional beings. Supanova is fandom at its absolute best: a chance to make friends and meet heroes, a chance to learn, and of course a chance to buy that certain something to complete your cosplay.

The best part, though, is that it’s inclusive. It’s not an event for any one fandom, and all are welcome (at least, so long as they’re obeying the strict anti-harassment rules). Each year, some of the biggest, most adored names in movies, TV, books, and animation gather to talk about creativity and craft, and to meet and mingle with fans. 2016 is shaping up to be another cracker of a Supanova, so you’re going to want to save the dates.

For sci-fi and crime fans, Captain Tight Pants himself, Nathan Fillion, will be on hand. Best known for playing Captain Malcolm Reynolds in ‘Firefly’ and ‘Serenity’, Fillion is a beloved part of pop culture. He’s had stints on some of the most iconic shows and projects, and won hearts as crime writing royalty and all-round goofball Richard Castle in ‘Castle’. The Firefly cast are always huge drawcards, even though the iconic series lasted only one season. So if you’re planning a photo or autograph, book in fast to avoid disappointment.

‘Pretty Little Liars’ star Lucy Hale will be making an appearance, talking about her acting work, but also her debut album, ‘Road Between’. Hale has worked on some big ticket YA projects, including ‘The Sisterhood Of The Travelling Pants 2’, and ‘A Cinderella Story: Once Upon A Song’, and looks set to be a big hit with Supanova guests.

For those who like their humour on the crasser end of the spectrum, the chatty half of ‘Jay And Silent Bob’, Jason Mewes will be bringing the bad language to Supanova. Mewes has become a comedy icon playing Jay, the hyper-horny speed-talker with a heart of tarnished, possibly fake gold. If you prefer your characters animated, Supanova will play host to some of the biggest, most beloved names in the industry.

Fans of ‘Pokemon’ will get the chance to meet Veronica Taylor, who voiced Ash (as well as April in ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles', and a host of other characters). If you’re more a fan of ‘Ghost In The Shell’, the voice of Major Motoko Kusanagi, Mary Elizabeth McGlynn, will be on hand to answer fan questions. And gamers will love the chance to see Steve Blum, who has added his voice to a staggering range of movies and games including ‘Ben 10’, ‘Arkham Asylum’, ‘X-Men’, and ‘Naruto’.

Word nerds, too, are in luck: award-winning authors Alan Baxter (creator of the ‘Alex Caine’ trilogy) and Peter V. Brett (author of the ‘Demon Cycle’ series) will be talking writing, fight scenes and monsters in a range of panel events. And of course, no Supanova is complete without the cosplayers; a dazzling spectacle of costuming and improvisation that’s not to be missed.

Supanova has a habit of announcing more big names in the lead-up to each event, so make sure you keep an eye on their website and social media haunts.

Supanova takes place at the Brisbane Exhibition & Centre 11-13 November and Adelaide Showground 18-20 November.
