Reddit users and crowdfunding patrons donate more than $90,000 for travel and equipment costs.
A Jamaican bobsled team will be competing at the year's Winter Olympics in Sochi thanks to donations of approximately $93,000 from members of the Internet community.
Jamaica has not entered a bobsled team at the Winter Olympics for the past 12 years but successfully qualified this year. With no official funding and little money for travel and equipment costs, Team Jamaica turned to the Internet for help.
More than $23,111 was raised through the team's official Indiegogo crowd funding page but the majority of donations were raised by Reddit users. A post on the site entitled “Let's send the Jamaican bobsled team to the Winter Olympics!” encouraged Cool Runnings fans and Redditers to donate 'dogecoins' to Team Jamaica.
A form of virtual currency similar to Bitcoin and based on a popular, dogecoins trade for approximately $0.0009547. The post generated approximately $30,000 and the Jamaican bobsled team officially qualified for the event on Saturday.
