The Taylor Swift juggernaut refuses to stay in its lane.
Scott and Andrea Swift have created tidal waves in the film industry by cutting out the ‘middle man’ – in this instance Hollywood studios – for distribution rights for their megastar daughter’s concert film, ‘Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour’.
The Swifts reportedly discontinued negotiations with a studio and cut a deal directly with AMC cinemas. The move potentially paves the way for other producers to follow suit.
The Daily Mail described the manoeuvre as allowing the singer and entrepreneur to distribute the film on her own terms, without the role of Hollywood power-players who can take up to 70 per cent of the income a film makes on an opening weekend.
“Signing a distribution deal … outside of Hollywood … has also created headaches for other producers. Swift’s release date is October 13th, but due to a conflict with The Exorcist: Believer, the horror film's producers have been forced to change plans. The Exorcist producer Jason Blum tweeted in August: "Look what you made me do! #taylorwins. Fans had previously touted the occasions as the 'Exorswift' ."
Pre-sales for her concert film ‘Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour’ have reached a blockbuster $100 million to date.
