With a luxurious voice and elegant approach to music, Sarah Collyer has been influenced by jazz greats like Nina Simone and Miles Davis, but finds inspiration in contemporary artists like Melody Gardot, Diana Krall, and even Tom Waits.
The Brisbane musician shares her top five underrated/ awesome places in Australia ahead of her upcoming Brisbane Jazz Club show.
Albany, WA
I visited Albany this year, and was amazed by the natural beauty – the beaches – like Two People’s Bay are unbelievably beautiful and pristine. And there was hardly anyone there it seemed. I kept saying “where is everyone? – This place is so good!”Two People's Bay
Yamba, NSW
I discovered Yamba this year too! A laidback, seaside town that hasn’t been developed into a concrete monstrosity by the sea! There’s a couple of funky-little places to eat and miles of unspoilt beaches to explore. Heaven!Yamba
Stanley, TAS
A sleepy, little town on the north-west coast of Tasmania, dominated by a very large rock – ‘The Nut’. Quiet, peaceful and still brimming with colonial heritage, it’s a bit like stepping back in time. The rolling ocean for as far as the eye can see is rather nice too!Stanley
Hobart, TAS
There’s something about Hobart; down near Salamanca Place there’s just a really great, creative vibe. The old-stone buildings and the crisp, cold air make you feel like you could be in some European port.Hobart
The Strand, Townsville
An odd choice maybe. I lived in Townsville for four years while studying at JCU. The Strand was developed while I was there, so knowing what the seafront was like before the development maybe is why I appreciate the new Strand so much. It is an oasis, a beautiful place to be – looking out at the majestic Magnetic Island.Townsville
