The spouse of Glamour Magazine's 2001 winner of Woman Of The Year has Fed-Exed his late wife's award back to the magazine after this year's winner was announced as Caitlyn Jenner.
Moira Smith, 38, was one of the NYPD officers who lost their lives during the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the Trade Centre twin towers. She was named Woman Of The Year by Glamour Magazine that same year for her bravery in leading people to safety. Smith's husband James has obviously taken exception to this year's winner, Caitlyn Jenner, and made the decision to return his wife's award.
The admiration for Caitlyn Jenner has come under scrutiny by some people since her decision to publicly come out as a woman. Some sectors of society have been angered about the use of the word 'brave' when it has been used to describe her decision.
In a letter that was sent along with the return of the award James stated “I was shocked and saddened to learn that Glamour has just named Bruce Jenner 'Woman of the Year'. Was there no woman in America, or the rest of the world, more deserving than this man? ... I can only guess that this was a publicity stunt meant to resuscitate a dying medium. After discussing this slap in the face to the memory of our Hero with my family, I have decided to return Moira's award to Glamour magazine."
Glamour magazine has responded with a statement of their own which reinforces their decision on this years winner. "We were proud to honour his wife ... in 2001, and we stand by our decision to honor Caitlyn Jenner. Glamour's Women Of The Year Awards recognise women with a variety of backgrounds and experiences."
