QMDAs Are The Queensland Music Design Awards

Andrea Smith wants to acknowledge the designers behind poster art as part of the Queensland Music Design Awards
Founder and Publisher. Based in Brisbane.
Howard started Scene Magazine in 1993. Paul Keating was Prime Minister. Whitney, Janet and Mariah all had Aussie #1s and Mark Zuckerberg was 9. Over 30 years he's overseen the growth of scenestr magazine to become Australia's largest – and only national – street press while forging a digital-first imperative for the title in the mid-naughties. He's judged more battle of the bands than he cares to remember and proud of the myriad media partnerships the company has earned across the music, arts and comedy sectors. He likes Star Trek and a good Oxford Comma – way too much fun at parties.

The scenestr. Queensland Music Design Awards (QMDA) are a new addition to the Queensland Music calendar.

The QMDAs have been developed to recognise and celebrate the hidden champions of the music industry. They're the brainchild of long-standing and well credentialled Queensland music industry identities Paul Robinson, owner of The New Globe Theatre, and Andrea Smith of Miss Music Biz/ My Creative Biz.

The awards are statewide and open to all Queensland photographers, graphic designers, videographers, web designers and T-shirt & merchandise designers.

Andrea told scenestr the "fantastic work from the creators that bring to life the visual aspect of the music industry needed to be recognised and rewarded and celebrated".

Robinson first raised the idea with Smith, who was a practising graphic artist prior to working in the music industry, in mid-2014. "I loved the idea. The visual side of the music industry is so important, it can help set a mood and definitely helps to market the acts, events and businesses.

"An evocative clip, photograph or cover can make you want to hear more of an act, attend that venue or event, imagine what it would have been like to attend that gig or festival. Of course the work also has to be fit for purpose."

The duo is unaware of any parallel awards in the southern states, making it a first for Queensland, but when researching the idea Andrea saw similar ideas in the United States.

Judges will be invited from the awards' category industries, including media partner Eyeball Media which produces scenestr.com.au and has published street press titles in Queensland and Australia for 22 years.
