As with fashion, product design sees its fair share of trends. These trends are reflected in, and by, our buying behaviour. Here’s a look at some of the most popular product design trends of 2014.

Minimalism

Less truly is more this year when it comes to product design. At a time when the chaotic hustle and bustle of everyday life completely surrounds us, simple – yet elegant – product design is in dire need. Thankfully, designers around the world have heeded to this call and responded appropriately: from kitchen appliances, to furniture, to gadgetry. The mantra behind this trend is to omit everything that’s superfluous in favour of smart design and multifunctionality.

Eco-design

Inspired by a focus on sustainability and minimal environmental impact, eco-design is one of the most popular design trends of the last few years. 2014 is set to see even more eco-friendly designed products enter the marketplace. Natural and/ or recycled materials and a more robust design are important elements of this product design approach.

Lampshades made from wood, vases made from pulp, and bikes made from cardboard are all examples of the way designers are using sustainable materials in new ways to create products that leave less of a carbon footprint for future generations. Product design consultancy firms such as Formzoo Designs are leaders when it comes to this approach, and there are many others around the world who are similarly inclined.

Connectivity

Being connected – or at least, having the ability to get connected – is an important product design trend of 2014. In an age of Wi-Fi and wireless technology, connectivity is no longer limited to the smartphone or tablet. These days, more and more devices and appliances around the home are able to be controlled remotely, and no doubt we’ll see this design trend continue well into the next decade.

Stealth design

The aesthetic appeal of the triangle is making waves this year as a popular product design trend. Everything from furniture to jewelry to kitchen utensils is being designed in this way, creating an almost futuristic look on common household items. This design approach obviously gets its name from the military stealth technology and design, and has finally made its way to consumerist market.

Matte finish An increasingly popular product design trend – especially when it comes to packaging – the matte finish is an important player in 2014. This design element can help products stand out from the crowd by adding that much needed contrast. Even when colours are used, the matte finish subdues them and prevents colour from appearing too tacky. Simple and stylish, no doubt the matte finish will continue to play an important part in product design in the coming years.
