New Zealand medium, Kelvin Cruickshank is touring Queensland this month for two Soul Food shows.

We asked him about his work and how he came to be here in life given his training as a chef and catering consultant. What made you decide to use your medium abilities to work on the series 'Sensing Murders'?
My goal as always is to help people. It brings peace to my heart helping people in need. The victims and the families of murder cases need closure too.

How has 'Soul Food' differed from 'Sensing Murders' in terms of your experiences? Soul Food is [my] live and on-stage [show] and the experience is amazing. Spirit have their ways of coming though to share their stories and memories to a venue of people. It is emotional, funny at times and inspiring.

Sensing Murder [NZ reality TV series with bereaved people] is isolated to fully focus on one person. The information provided by the spirit is more in depth and harder because of the type of death and the situation surrounding it.

You've mentioned in the past that having a live show is one of the hardest things a medium can do – what's the most difficult part?
The most difficult part for a live Soul Food show usually happens 10 mins before I go on stage. Nothing of course is scripted or planned so it's all done with faith. Having butterflies and nerves just before the curtain is pulled is overwhelming to me. Just imagine how many spirits are around me all bursting to talk to their loved ones in the audience.

What has been the most stressful or unfriendly encounter you've experienced with a spirit?
The most stressful encounter was not from the spirit at all. We are a team and we work together with love. If there was no love in what we do, we wouldn't be doing it. In saying that I was out in the field on a murder case when I realised the person I was with killed the person we were looking for. When the penny dropped I was internally shaking and having to play things down. I certainly new my spirit people were keeping me safe but OMG talk about being freaked out!

Why do you believe spirits come to you to communicate with this world?
A lot of people don't get that chance to say goodbye neither do those whom have past. They communicate to restore the light in us, to let us know with proof that they are OK and love us. After all, they don't turn into monsters when they pass away. They are still our family and still love us and miss us as much as we miss them.

What is the best part about having a show like 'Soul Food'?
The best part for me is watching the weight and darkness leave people. They light up after the connection has been made. I get to see this every time I work with spirit. It truly is a blessing to watch.

Is interest in mediums and their work increasing or decreasing in your opinion?
I believe mediumship has gone to a new level. More evidence of life after death can be given and more people have stopped being afraid of being judged and choose to speak there experiences openly. The fear has gone because we're here to help not hurt. It’s always an honour and pleasure to share this beautiful gift to everyone. All we have to do, is open our eyes to see the miracles.
