A modern, walk-in 'edible garden' will be a showpiece feature of the Manly Food, Wine & Sustainability Festival.
The DIG Manly Edible Garden is designed to promote a "local, seasonal and sustainable homegrown" philosophy of food. Visitors will be able to walk through the edible garden, built around handcrafted recycled timber 'no-dig' beds made from old railway sleepers, decking material, pallet boxes and fence posts.
Based around a working aquaphonics system perfectly suited to suburban homes, the garden will include colourful vertical gardens ideal for a sunny balcony. Displaying organic and locally sourced fruits and vegetables, the garden will also offer 'tasters' and information on where to source your own sustainable food locally.
"The DIG Manly Edible Garden is designed to show festival patrons the range of options available to people if they wish to integrate some simple but beautiful design concepts into their backyard or balcony," said Manly Mayor Jean Hay.
"People will be surprised how easy it is to make their garden/balcony a productive and decorative space. The edible garden has options for people with a backyard, a small balcony and suits people of all ages and budgets."
The DIG Manly Edible Garden will be located on The Corso (Manly's main pedestrian thoroughfare) opposite Manly Ocean Beach.
The Manly Food, Wine & Sustainability Festival — held between 11:30am and 5pm on Saturday June 1 and Sunday June 2 — is one of Sydney's largest celebrations of food and wine, and attracts an estimated 30,000 patrons over the weekend.
