MX Newspapers To Close

MX Newspapers To Close
Founder and Publisher. Based in Brisbane.
Howard started Scene Magazine in 1993. Paul Keating was Prime Minister. Whitney, Janet and Mariah all had Aussie #1s and Mark Zuckerberg was 9. Over 30 years he's overseen the growth of scenestr magazine to become Australia's largest – and only national – street press while forging a digital-first imperative for the title in the mid-naughties. He's judged more battle of the bands than he cares to remember and proud of the myriad media partnerships the company has earned across the music, arts and comedy sectors. He likes Star Trek and a good Oxford Comma – way too much fun at parties.

MX Newspapers in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane will close within the fortnight.

Media industry hub, Mumbrella, reports staff were told this morning and further that a News spokesperson has since confirmed the closure to it.

The spokesperson said “The decision is a reflection of the changing reading habits of commuters who now turn to their mobile phones and tablets on their way to and from work. News will continue to invest in our extensive suite of print and digital products, which are purchased and read by millions of Australians every day.”

The Sydney Morning Herald said "the equivalent of 30 full-time journalists will be affected across Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, but it is not clear how many will lose their jobs. Management has told saff redundancies are inevitable although they will try to redeploy some positions to other News Corp mastheads."

The paper's five staff in Brisbane had no warning the axe was about to fall and were first informed about their closure early on Thursday afternoon.
