The creative academy launches a new initiative to encourage collaborative projects between students.
The 'Make it With JMC' programme has launched a new programme for students to work on real world creative projects, giving them valuable industry experience and a platform to showcase their works. The initiative brings together students from different departments coming together to create high-quality content.
Projects so far include entertainment business, music and songwriting students coming together to develop the concept, script, music and recordings for an ARN and Austereo radio commercial, as well as game development, animation and digital design students creating a line of relevant t-shirt designs for JMC's online marketplace.
Karen Markakis, Head of Marketing and Branding at JMC says “we felt the best way to give our students this opportunity was to involve them in pitching concepts for a series of real commercial projects we had on scope. We are confident in the quality of work our students produce and so trust in their ability to undertake work that would normally be outsourced."
'Make It With JMC' emphasises the importance of working to a creative brief, and gives students the opportunity to practice working on real projects with other students before launching into their careers. Jye Hannan, a student who worked on the radio commercial, explains that "working with students from other courses is important because it is creatively stimulating and allows everyone to approach the same task from different perspectives.” JMC is fostering a better understanding of the way the industry works by bringing together students from different faculties to work together on real projects.
Members of the marketing team at JMC Academy, Hannah Klomp and Lauren Thorpe, talk more about the initiative:
What was the idea behind the launching of this initiative?
The idea of the 'Make It With JMC' initiative is to encourage students from all the different departments of JMC Academy to work together on real collaborative commercial projects, providing them with real world industry experience. The idea was to cement our integration at JMC Academy between all eight courses and convey the unique element and importance of collaboration both during studies and within the industry.
How does the programme help students to better understand the industry?
Students are given the opportunity to pitch ideas and concepts for a series of real commercial projects whilst studying at JMC. Integration is a crucial aspect of study and unique offering at JMC Academy and assists students in gaining a clearer understanding of the interrelated networks at play on a creative project.
What has the reception from students been like towards this initiative?
Students have been very excited they are receiving more and more opportunities to participate in real industry experiences and are excited to be a part of the initiative.
Do students receive any financial return from these real world projects?
Yes, students do receive financial return from these real world projects. Students are paid industry rates for their work and time.
How successful has the 'Make It With JMC' initiative been so far?
Even though this initiative is still quite new, the projects that the students have worked on so far for the ‘Make It With JMC’ initiative have been of high quality, and have been perceived positively by our audiences. Overall the initiative has been successful in providing students with the opportunity to gain a clearer understanding of the interrelated networks at play on a creative project.
Are there many interesting creative collaborative projects on the horizon?
Yes – definitely! Through the ‘Make It With JMC’ initiative, these creative collaborative projects will continue to expand and be provided to our students. Our next project will see students from all the different departments at JMC Academy to work together to produce a complete campaign. Stay tuned!
