Currently nearing the end of a northern summer tour of Quebec and the US, Australian folk troubadour Kim Churchill is jetting home to perform two special sets at next weekend's Wanderer Festival.
After its debut event last year, the Sapphire Coast three-day festival is back with an amazing line-up featuring a stack of national and international talent including Ocean Alley, Thelma Plum, The Jungle Giants, Kevin Corby, Django Django, Babe Rainbow, Ben Lee, Cash Savage And The Last Drinks, Lonnie Holley, [A] BLKstar, Northeast Party House, Sampa The Great, and Teen Jesus And The Jean Teasers.Wanderer's music programme will be complemented by art, comedy, theatre, and circus performers plus a host of artisan workshops and stalls.
In January this year, Kim released his latest studio album 'Dawn Sounds', which was the follow-up to his 2019 record 'I AM'.
"My new album 'Dawn Sounds' is now officially starting its life on planet earth," shared Kim at the time of release. "Tbh I really don't care if it's a complete flop or not.
"It sits on my friend's bench top next to the record player and I couldn't be more proud of it there. I've never felt such love for my music and I'm so thrilled that it has a place in the world."
Here, Kim shares some locations in and around the Sapphire Coast he reckons you should indulge if you're headed to the festival (or if you're in the area generally).
1: Cocktail at Dulcie's
Beautiful little bar right in Merimbula that does gorgeous cocktails and is just a really lovely place to hang. They do an epic 'old fashioned'. And the burgers are flippin' fantastic!
2: Wild Rye's Bakery in Pambula
Flippin' incredible almond croissant! Also their pies are all so good. Been going there for years for post surf hangs and it blows me away we've got such an epic bakery in our neck of the woods. Also Switchfoot Boardstore has some amazing surfboards next door.
3. Picnic at Hastings Point
This is a really beautiful and picturesque national park to go and hang out at. Some stunning little bush walks around there, and a place my Mum and Dad and I go a fair bit for a picnic and a walk. Just damn good for the soul.4. Go for a swim at Mitchies Jetty
This is a little nook of Merimbula that's super gorgeous. Head down and get a coffee from the cart and have a beautiful swim and relax under the trees. It's so cute and quite calming. Also, if you want a wild breakfast burger head up the road to Cranky's. They're not so cranky in reality. ;)
5. Bike ride from Merimbula to Longstocking Brewery
This is fun and really beautiful. There is a bike path that goes from the bridge in Merimbula all the way to Pambula. It goes past the airport and eventually you can ride through the nature reserve Pamboola and even ride through it to end up at Longstockings Brewery in Oaklands. Their beers are really nice! Pamboola has incredible bird watching and is just a really cared for and quaint reserve with lots to see.
Wanderer Festival returns to Pambula Beach, (Sapphire Coast) 29 September to 1 October, 2023.
