Introducing Adelaide Roller Derby Player Rage Ruthless

Rage Ruthless
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

This weekend (9 July) sees the final regular season match in the 2022 Adelaide Roller Derby season as the two original ADRD squads, Mile Die Club and the Salty Dolls strap on their laces.

Mile Die Club need to win to book their place in the major Grand Final (in early August) alongside the Road Train Rollers; while Salty Dolls will be looking to avoid going winless in 2022 with their first victory this season.

Roller derby is a great way to spend an afternoon and evening with a family-friendly atmosphere, building community and creating positive change, alongside the fierce competition on track.

Here, we profile Wild Hearses player Rage Ruthless.

Who is Rage Ruthless... I've been playing derby for almost seven years, which is also about the same amount of time I've been skating. I had absolutely no idea what I was doing when I started, I was certifiably terrible.

I started at another derby league (Murder City) before joining ADRD four years ago. I've been repping the purple and orange since then as member of the Wild Hearses.

My role... Jammer. I score the points (when I'm not on the ground or stuck behind a good tripod).

My first roller derby bout was... As a viewer, the 2014 ADRD grand final – Salty Dolls versus Road Train Rollers. I spent most of the game glued to my phone trying to understand the rules.

When did you settle on your roller derby name... I had a shortlist but my name was always the frontrunner. I knew I wanted to pay homage to 'Whip It', the movie that introduced me to derby.

What celebrity/ famous person would you love to be the team's spokesperson? I think we're all superstars in our own right, no celebrities needed.

The last time I saw the inside of a gym was... Before I (partially) tore a ligament in my foot six weeks ago.

Social media is... Fun in moderation.

My favourite app at the moment is? Not quite an app but I'm obsessed with Wordle (and all its spin-offs because I'm a huge word game nerd: Dordle, Quordle, Octordle).

If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us? I make a mean Mongolian tempeh.

To date, my most embarrassing moment was the time... I embarrass myself so often it's hard to single something out. I'm Hard of Hearing, so I often find myself having to awkwardly pretend I've understood something I definitely didn't. It's fine most of the time until I accidentally laugh at someone's grandma dying!

When it comes to pets are you a lover or hater of our furry friends? Love pets! I have a cat called Charlie who is a stage five clinger!

What's the one chore you dislike the most? Folding laundry – it never ends.

Do you have any phobias? I think the ocean is terrifying – it's basically like outer space but on earth.

Would you ever partake in a reality show? I'd agree to any show where someone else fixes up my house – my laundry needs a serious makeover.

If you could prank any of your friends, who's your target, and how are you bringing them down? I'm too much of an open book to get away with any good pranks, I would definitely start laughing and blow the whole thing.

Which fictional character best describes your personality? I've always related to Monica from 'Friends' – a bit overbearing and super competitive.

Last show you binge-watched? The latest season of 'Stranger Things' – Team Steve all the way!
